Building Healthy Communities

At United Way of the Ohio Valley, we believe strong communities begin with healthy people and safe, stable environments. Through partnerships with local nonprofits, schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations, we work to improve access to essential services and address the conditions that influence long-term health and well-being across our region.

Our work in building healthy communities focuses on three key outcomes:

Safe Homes and Communities

We support programs and initiatives that help individuals and families live in homes and neighborhoods free from violence and environmental hazards. By strengthening access to housing stability, safety resources, and community supports, we help create environments where people can feel secure, connected, and able to thrive.

Healthy Beginnings

Every child deserves a strong start. We invest in efforts that promote healthy pregnancies and births, expand access to quality, culturally responsive prenatal, primary, and preventive care, and support families in creating nurturing home environments. These early foundations are critical to lifelong health, learning, and success.

Healthy Eating and Active Living

Good health depends on everyday choices — and the ability to make them. We work to increase access to affordable, nutritious food and safe opportunities for physical activity, particularly in communities facing the greatest barriers. Together with our partners, we help individuals and families build healthier habits that strengthen both personal well-being and community vitality.
