Helping Children and Youth Achieve Their Potential

At United Way of the Ohio Valley, we believe education is one of the most powerful pathways to opportunity. From early childhood through high school graduation, we partner with schools, nonprofits, families, and community leaders to ensure children and youth have the support they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Our work focuses on key milestones that research shows are critical to long-term success:

School Readiness

Children enter kindergarten healthy and prepared to learn, with strong physical, social-emotional, cognitive, and language development. We support early learning programs and family resources that help build these essential foundations before a child ever steps into a classroom.

Early Grade Reading

Children read proficiently by the end of third grade, developing the comprehension and literacy skills needed to learn across all subjects. We invest in programs that strengthen reading instruction, provide tutoring and mentoring, and engage families in supporting literacy at home.

Middle School Success

Students successfully navigate the transition to middle school, building academic confidence, positive relationships, and the problem-solving and life skills needed for high school success. We prioritize supports that keep students engaged, motivated, and connected during these critical years.

High School Graduation

Students graduate on time prepared for college, career, and life. Through partnerships that expand access to academic support, career exploration, mentoring, and wraparound services, we help young people stay on track and move confidently toward their goals.
